Sunday’s sermon (19th May) suggested that Thomas’ confession in John 20: 20-31 serves as a template for all would-be followers of Jesus (see verse 31). By acknowledging Christ as Lord, we do not only give Him sovereignty over our lives but we also confess Jesus to be God – the one true God who has revealed Himself from the first page of the Old Testament onwards.
Thomas witnessed at least one post-resurrection appearance of Jesus. It is given to very few to see Jesus in this way… so does Jesus then let us off the hook? Not really. Rather, Jesus promises blessing for believers like us:
Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29 (NIV)
Shall we take the confession of Thomas as our own? A confession to make as we worship the risen king. And a confession to make as we tell others the good news about Jesus.
